Eating from the Garden

Oxeye daisy flowering in November

I am constantly astonished to find how many plants  are still flowering in the garden.  Here's the oxeye daisy looking as fresh as ever.

It is surprising to me how much there is to eat in the garden even in winter. I  have about nine herbs I can pick to put in my lunchtime salad. You only need a little to make it really tasty.

There are the acid-loving blueberries. I  bought two different types, one hasn't produced anything worth eating in the two years it's been in and I shall let it go next year. The other though, has been producing berries and still is, in the middle of winter, so I shall keep it. I put them in raised spaces in the garden and keep them filled with acid soil.

Blueberries still fruiting late in the year

The other herbs are all simple to grow and I put them anywhere in the garden where there is a bit of space. So at this time of year I grow and eat dandelions, chives, red-veined sorrel, oregano, sweet cicely, rosemary, thyme and wild garlic.

The fox is still around every day. It's begun to try and get into the compost heap which I keep covered with old carpet held down with various bricks and flower pots.
