Herbs from the garden

I wonder what the foxes do in winter. I didn't see my fox much in the cold weather but she has appeared again nearly every day and I am glad to see her.

I try to eat fresh herbs from the garden every day. At the moment there are many to choose from, amongst which are most of the expected ones:  mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, chives and sage.

I usually collect a handful to eat with my lunch, chopped and scattered on top of whatever I am having. The mint has to be kept in a pot otherwise it will take over the garden, but the others I keep in pots or the garden - the more the merrier - they look good and it's surprising how much you can eat.

The rarer ones include dandelions, which I allow to grow all over the garden because so many things can eat them and that's really what this garden is about. I eat a leaf or two and they look so gorgeous.

Then there is lovage which is a monster but good grown against a wall, something called Jack-by-the-hedge or garlic mustard, which is delicious, sweet cicely, also known as garden myrrh or Spanish chervil marvellous for adding aniseedy flavours to salads.

  2. Rom - Do you have thyme ? - I do but it never seems as happy as I expect. I've also tried coriander but it always gets eaten by something.

    1. No I don't have thyme at the moment. I've tried growing it on various occasions but it doesn't take.
