The Relief of Cutting Back

Lawrence's huge pile of leaves
It's been so dry this year I haven't liked to cut back anything until we get some rain. Last week we got a decent rainfall at last and my grandson came and cut the grass, pruned the plum tree, and cut back the vine, which only has wine grapes and grows over everything including  next door's growth. The transformation is wonderful.

Tomatoes ripening on the dining table
The days are much shorter now so I took in all the tomatoes growing in pots. They are ripening very nicely on the kitchen table and I have found some recipes for cooking unripe tomatoes so they'll all get eaten. Very pleasing. They were given to me as seedlings by a friend, are small so don't need tying in and very worth while.

Most of the summer flowering tings are over now. But they did well considering the lack of rain. Here are some of them.

Helenium 'Moerheim Beauty'

Verbena bonariensis
Cosmos bipinnatus
