| Calycanthus 'Hartlage Wine' and Cornus kousa 'China Girl' |
It was my birthday last week and I received from my sister some special plants for the garden which I would like to share with readers. The two most important ones are a Calycanthus raulstonii 'Hartlage Wine', which is rare in this country, has deep burgundy flowers with cinnamon scented foliage and likes sun or part shade.

Cornus kousa 'China Girl' a tall Chinese dogwood which has large white bracts, striking red leaves in autumn and edible strawberry-like fruits. I had intended to put the Calycanthus in a bed next to the wall but have now put both together in front of the kitchen window where I can see them all the time. I can't wait to try the fruits of the Cornus.

She also gave me some plants she grew from seed, which I am looking forward to replanting when they are a bit larger.
The sparrows have more or less commandeered the water for the birds kept in the bottom of a dustbin which I cut out when the bin leaked. They have a wonderful time splashing about, separately or together all day long. In fact, the sparrows have only been here for about five years. They vanished from the garden about 20 years ago and one pair came back about five years ago. They now commandeer the part of the garden near the house and have their nests in the roof.
